Practical guide
Repotting in eight steps
These steps cover rooted cherry laurel in containers. Hedge planting is also a labelled use, but requires preparation suited to the garden soil.

Check the root ball and available space
Check whether the cherry laurel needs more root space. A densely rooted ball is a reason to examine the container. If leaves are yellow or growth is weak, assess moisture, drainage and position too.
Prepare the compost, a suitable container, a watering can and clean tools. Work in frost-free weather and avoid extreme heat. Gently moisten a severely dry root ball before repotting.

Choose the container to fit the root ball
If extra space is needed, choose a slightly larger, stable container with drainage holes. There should be room for fresh compost beside and beneath the root ball.
Allow enough height to retain the original planting depth and leave a watering rim. Shrub height alone does not determine the container size or the volume of compost required.

Keep drainage holes open
Check and clear drainage holes. An extra coarse layer is not required and cannot replace free drainage.
Add a base layer of loosened compost. Do not leave the container standing in water.

Release the plant gently
Support the root ball and ease it carefully out of its old container. Gently squeeze the sides of a flexible plastic pot or tap the pot wall. Do not pull forcefully on the shoots.
Inspect the exposed ball for damaged or dead roots. Retain healthy roots wherever possible. Investigate unusual smells, soft root tissue or severe damage before proceeding.

Set the compost bed and planting depth
Add an initial layer of Cherry Laurel Compost to the container. Set the root ball on it and check the height. Add or remove compost beneath the ball until the position is right.
The old root-ball surface should finish level with the new compost surface. Do not bury the point where roots meet shoots more deeply. Leave space below the pot rim to hold watering water.

Fill around the sides and firm gently
Position the shrub and gradually fill the space around the root ball with compost. Firm lightly with your fingers to remove large air pockets.
Do not compact the compost forcefully. Keep the ball at its original height and leave an even watering rim.

Water thoroughly and watch the drainage
Water slowly and evenly over the root zone. The water should reach both the existing root ball and the added compost. Watch for excess water draining from the bottom.
Do not leave drained water standing in the saucer or outer pot. If water only overflows the upper rim, check the rim, surface and drainage before continuing.

Check settling and adjust aftercare
After watering, check whether compost has settled around the sides. Top up gently if necessary, keeping the original planting depth and root collar uncovered.
Check moisture before subsequent watering. The compost already contains nutrients. Plan additional feeding around plant condition, season and nutrients already supplied, following the directions for the fertiliser used.

Cherry laurel is not culinary bay. Do not eat plant parts; leaves and seeds are toxic. Wear gloves when handling.
- Wear gloves, cover open wounds and wash hands with soap and water afterwards. Growing media may contain microorganisms.
- Avoid dust and ventilate well. Take extra care with sensitive airways or allergies to mould and soil ingredients; use suitable respiratory protection when needed.
- Avoid eye contact. If compost enters the eyes, rinse with water. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
- Not for consumption. Keep out of reach of children and pets and separate from food and animal feed. If accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice and have product information available.
- Transport bags closed and move heavy containers with assistance. Clear spilled compost to prevent slipping.
- Dispose of residues and packaging according to local rules. Do not put into drains or release uncontrolled into the environment.
