Choose plants for a dry position
Cushions and rosettes among rocks show one possible design for dry, freely draining positions. Match plant selection, watering and root space to each other.

Choose the plants and position
First establish your plants’ light, moisture and soil-reaction needs. This compost is intended for suitable dry-site species; acid-loving or consistently moisture-dependent specialists may need a different growing medium.
Where possible, repot during a suitable growth period. Spring or early autumn suit many hardy species, but the particular plant remains the guide.

Prepare the trough or pot
Choose a container with clear drainage holes and sufficient root space. The fresh compost required is the space beside and beneath the root ball, not simply a function of plant height.
Allow for the eventual spread of cushions and rosettes. Leave enough space so vigorous neighbours do not cover slow-growing plants.

Provide free drainage
The eight diagrams show a shared container setup. If drainage material or water-permeable fleece is used, it must not block the drainage holes.
An extra layer does not guarantee protection against waterlogging. Position the trough so water can drain freely; do not leave standing water in a closed outer pot.

Ease the plant out gently
Loosen the old pot carefully and support the root ball. Do not pull on flower stalks, shoot tips or individual rosettes.
Preserve healthy roots where possible. Assess severely damaged or rotting roots separately; routine root cutting is not a general step for every rock garden plant.

Set the root-ball level
Add enough compost and place the root ball. Retain its original surface level; do not bury rosette centres, shoot bases or sensitive crowns more deeply.
Leave a little room below the rim for watering. Decorative stones must not crush the plant or make the root ball unstable.

Fill the gaps
Work the compost gently around the root ball and close larger gaps by firming lightly. Do not compact it hard.
If adding a mineral top-dressing, keep living plant parts clear. Top-dressing changes neither the required planting depth nor the species’ water needs.

Water according to the plant
For newly planted, intact root balls, water the fresh compost carefully and let excess water drain. Choose timing and amount for the species and root condition.
Do not flood every species indiscriminately or let every plant dry out completely afterwards. For sensitive, injured succulent roots, follow that plant’s specific guidance.

Check aftercare and nutrients
After watering, correct small settled areas without burying plant bases. Check free drainage and stability.
Check moisture more frequently during establishment. The compost already has declared nutrients; plan further feeding according to actual need.

Questions about rock garden compost
Does this compost suit every rock garden plant?
No. It is intended for suitable dry-site plants. Large genera such as Saxifraga include different requirements. For acidic, humus-rich or longer-moist specialist sites, check the particular species.
Is this rock garden compost peat-free?
No. The label lists H3–H8 raised-bog peat alongside rock material, plant materials, raw clay and calcium carbonate. A high rock content does not make the mix peat-free.
Is a pH of 6.2 neutral?
No, 6.2 is slightly acidic. The declared value is measured in CaCl₂ and describes the growing medium. It does not guarantee the eventual soil reaction at every planting site.
Do I need to feed regularly?
Not automatically. Plant needs and nutrients already available determine feeding. The compost label gives no fixed feeding date. If you use the linked rock garden fertiliser, follow its own label rate and account for existing nutrients.
Can I plant a trough or dry stone wall with it?
Well-drained troughs and suitable crevices are possible planting positions for appropriate dry-site plants. The compost cannot replace sound construction or free drainage. Green-roof build-up, load capacity and drainage need separate planning.
Does the compost prevent root rot?
The mineral texture supports drainage only alongside a suitable container or planting site. Persistent wetness remains possible when outlets are blocked. The compost is not a treatment for plant diseases.

Distinguish dry and moister positions
The garden scene shows an example of dry, well-drained planting with cushions and rosettes. The group profile also presents other growing conditions; one scene does not establish suitability for every alpine plant.
Consider lime and acidic specialist sites
Soil reaction is part of plant selection. Lime-tolerant rock plants and acid-loving dwarf shrubs do not need the same mix. A group name on a fertiliser does not remove these differences.
