Rhododendron & Azalea Compost
Root space matched to the plant

A place for your plant
From a compact azalea to a large rhododendron shrub, flower colour, foliage and habit create very different garden scenes. Suitable soil and a sheltered position provide the foundation; fertiliser supplements nutrients during growth.

Roots need water and air

The declared mix in its bag
10 litres of ready-to-use growing medium. The original label lists ingredients, measured values and when to begin further feeding.
Details & background
The old root ball and new compost may dry at different rates. Check regularly and water thoughtfully. Ingredients and figures are collected in the product information.
Repotting: the complete process

Prepare the next planting step
Choose the container, root space and drainage carefully. The eight steps below show the complete repotting process.
The illustrated sequence shows repotting an established rooted plant. Assess garden planting sites and soil separately.
-
Recognise the need to repot
Check whether roots fill the pot or old compost has lost structure. Repot to help the roots rather than simply following a fixed date.
-
Choose a suitable container
A stable pot should hold the root ball with some fresh compost around it. Account for the broad root system of rhododendrons.
-
Keep drainage clear
Check drainage holes and remove blockages. A closed cachepot needs a removable inner pot with its own drainage. An extra coarse layer cannot replace drainage holes.
-
Release the root ball gently
Moisten the root ball beforehand if needed. Support its weight, release the pot carefully and do not pull the plant out by its branches.
-
Keep the previous depth
Add a little compost and set the root ball in place. Keep its top at the previous planting level and do not bury the root collar.
-
Fill around the root ball
Add compost around the root ball in small amounts and firm lightly. Do not compact it hard; leave watering space below the rim.
-
Water evenly
Water slowly to moisten the old root ball and fresh compost. Prefer low-lime water.
-
Monitor establishment
The label says to start supplementary feeding after six to eight weeks; account for growth, existing nutrition and fertiliser instructions. Do not automatically add more feed immediately after repotting. During the following weeks, check moisture in the old root ball and fresh compost separately.

Watch drainage and the condition of new shoots. Extra nutrients do not replace a suitable position.

Where iron is needed: Purital F06 iron fertiliser. Follow its dilution and application instructions.

Understand changes
Assess yellowing between green veins, brown buds and feeding damage separately. Soil pH, roots and leaf undersides give more useful clues than an extra dose of fertiliser.
Questions about the compost
Is this ready to use?
For rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and other acid-loving ornamental shrubs in borders and pots. Surrounding garden soil and drainage must also be suitable.
When should feeding begin?
The label says to start supplementary feeding after six to eight weeks; account for growth, existing nutrition and fertiliser instructions. Do not automatically add more feed immediately after repotting.
Does it contain peat?
The original label lists organic soil material from raised-bog peat H3–H8, plant materials from forestry, rock, calcium carbonate and NPK fertiliser. This product contains peat.
How much compost do I need?
The bag contains 10 litres. When repotting, the old root ball occupies part of the new container; fresh compost fills the space around and beneath it.
