- Prepare the granules
Thoroughly moisten before filling and rinse away loose fines.
- Monitor water level
Consider container instructions, roots and water consumption together.
Nutrient supply and the amount of growing medium are separate decisions. Base feeding on the chosen product, species and existing nutrition. This expanded clay does not carry a universal feeding interval like a pre-fertilised potting mix.

PropertiesProduct characteristics and guidance
Nutrient supply and the amount of growing medium are separate decisions. Base feeding on the chosen product, species and existing nutrition. This expanded clay does not carry a universal feeding interval like a pre-fertilised potting mix.
The level indicator and granules must fit the particular insert. The declared product pH is not automatically the pH of the water or prepared nutrient solution.
Material declarationStarting material, particle size and declared contents.
- Starting material: 100% clay (expanded clay), crushed, particle size 4–8 mm.
- Organic matter: the label states that the product contains little organic matter.
- Declared pH: 7.1. No measurement method is printed on the label.
- Declared under contaminants: nickel (Ni), 80 mg/kg.
- Contains boron and copper in agronomically relevant amounts. The label does not quantify them separately.

Expanded Clay 4–8 mm
Support plants and manage water deliberately

Start with the appropriate hydro container
The original 5 litre bag contains the crushed expanded clay. Choose material and container together; the amount required also depends on the existing root space.
Details & background
Grow without soil and manage the root space deliberately: this crushed expanded clay provides a mineral filling material for suitable soil-independent indoor planting systems. Choose 5 or 10 litres. Match water level and nutrient supply to the container and species.

The root space remains decisive

A closer look at the particles
The original texture photograph shows the actual crushed particles. Their irregular shape differs from rounded expanded-clay balls. The complete material declaration appears once in the product information.
Details & background
The texture photograph shows crushed particles of varied shapes. Whether they stay in an insert also depends on its slots. Check that roots have adequate access to air and that the water level suits the system.
Repotting: the complete process

Material for the next container change
The 10 litre bag also lets you prepare for a larger container change. Account for the existing root space when choosing the amount of material, moisten the particles thoroughly and have the appropriate growing container ready.
The eight shared diagrams accompany changing the container of a plant already grown in granules. The text explains differences from ordinary potting compost. This is not a universal guide to converting any soil-grown plant to hydroculture.
-
Check the existing growing setup
This guide describes repotting a plant already growing in a suitable granular system. Assess roots, the previous water level and the reason for moving it.
Converting a soil-grown plant to hydroculture is a separate process. It requires a species-specific assessment and is not equated with this container change.
-
Prepare the container and expanded clay
Choose a clean inner container suited to the plant and an appropriate outer container or reservoir. The water-level indicator must fit the setup and move freely.
Thoroughly moisten the expanded clay before use. Gently rinse away loose fines and avoid raising dust. Check whether particles can fall through the inner container’s openings.
-
Match the internal arrangement
The shared diagram shows a pot with a lower material zone. In hydroculture, the actual arrangement depends on the particular system, including the inner container and level indicator.
An arbitrary gravel layer does not replace proper water-level management. Keep the inner container’s openings clear; a closed hydro outer container serves a different purpose from a freely draining pot.
-
Remove the plant gently
Carefully loosen the existing insert and support the plant. Treat healthy, well-rooted material gently; avoid pulling roots forcefully or unnecessarily exposing them.
Assess soft or unusually smelling roots separately. Damaged plants first need an appropriate assessment of causes, not automatically more fertiliser.
-
Set planting depth and support
Add moistened expanded clay and position the plant at its previous planting height. Spread roots without sharply bending them.
Do not bury the stem base, rosette centre or sensitive shoots deeply in the material. Support larger plants appropriately if needed.
-
Fill gently around the roots
Distribute the granules carefully around the roots and close larger voids by moving the container gently. Do not press hard onto sensitive roots.
Keep the level indicator and maintenance openings accessible. An evenly filled container does not replace checking the actual water level.
-
Adjust water level deliberately
Add clean water suitable for the crop in the amount specified for the system. Account for water already present and watch the indicator.
Do not permanently submerge the entire root space. The permissible fill level depends on system and plant; no single maximum level applies to every container.
-
Observe after the move
Monitor water use, leaf firmness and new growth. Match light and warmth to the species without putting extra stress on a recently moved plant.
For the separately offered GREEN24 hydroculture fertiliser, its own instructions require at least two weeks without feeding after moving plants. Other fertilisers have their own directions.
Monitor water and growth
Check water level
Consumption changes with plant, light and room conditions. Read the indicator and check it moves freely; do not always top up to maximum on a fixed weekly schedule.
Match nutrition
Nutrient supply and the amount of growing medium are separate decisions. Base feeding on the chosen product, species and existing nutrition. This expanded clay does not carry a universal feeding interval like a pre-fertilised potting mix.
Observe roots
Healthy roots, suitable aeration and an appropriate location work together. Investigate causes and the growing setup if roots soften or develop an unusual smell.
Suitable material is not a cure-all
No. The declared product pH does not guarantee the pH of a prepared nutrient solution. Account for water quality, feeding and the particular crop. Boron and copper are declared as relevant; this does not establish universal complete nutrition.
Repotting an existing granular-grown plant and converting a soil-grown plant to hydroculture are different operations. Suitability depends on species, root condition and previous culture. This page’s illustrated guide only covers changing the container of a plant already suited to granular culture.
Expanded-clay questions
Is this ordinary potting compost?
No. It is crushed expanded clay for suitable soilless indoor planting systems. Manage water and nutrients to suit the crop. Changing the filling material alone does not make a particular plant suitable for hydroculture.
Do 5 and 10 litres differ?
Both original bags carry the same independently checked declaration and 4–8 mm particle size. Volume, price and shipping weight differ. Rounded expanded-clay balls measuring 8–16 mm are a different product.
Should I wet the expanded clay first?
Yes. The label requires thorough moistening before use. The product description also recommends rinsing away loose fines. Avoid raising dust and do not fill slotted inserts without checking whether the particles can pass through.
Does it automatically maintain the right pH and nutrients?
No. The declared product pH does not guarantee the pH of a prepared nutrient solution. Account for water quality, feeding and the particular crop. Boron and copper are declared as relevant; this does not establish universal complete nutrition.
Can every soil-grown plant be moved straight into it?
Repotting an existing granular-grown plant and converting a soil-grown plant to hydroculture are different operations. Suitability depends on species, root condition and previous culture. This page’s illustrated guide only covers changing the container of a plant already suited to granular culture.
Can I reuse it or put it into a garden bed?
The label permits later reuse only for the same intended purpose and limits application to soil-independent growing methods. Check condition and residues. General use as a garden-soil improver is not recommended here; follow local disposal requirements.
Understand roots and nutrients
Hydroculture describes a growing method rather than a botanical plant group. Light needs, growth form and dormancy remain species-specific. The existing guide explains general plant-nutrition topics.
Safety and storage
Safety instructions
Wash your face and hands thoroughly. Use diluted fertiliser promptly and keep it out of water bodies and wastewater.
Product GPSR safety information
A safety PDF is not currently available for this product. Please refer to the product information below and the label.
Storage
Store clean and under cover.
Store sheltered from the weather, protected from waterlogging and out of direct sunlight. Keep opened bags clean and closed.
The label permits reuse after the end of use only for the same intended purpose. Assess condition and possible residues before further use. Follow local disposal requirements; official advisory guidance takes precedence.
- Avoid raising dust when pouring and rinsing. Store out of reach of children and animals. Clean hands after use.
