Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Fragrant flowers in many colours on climbing stems 80 to 100 cm tall: a sweet pea mix in the style of old Biedermeier gardens, flowering from July to September.
The story
Origins & history
The sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is native to southern Italy and Sicily. At the end of the 17th century the Sicilian monk Franciscus Cupani sent seeds to England. There it became a fashionable flower in the 19th century, and breeders created a wealth of new colours.
Uses
Its scent is its greatest treasure – on a fence, trellis or obelisk it becomes a fragrant wall of flowers. It thrives in sun or partial shade and needs a support to climb. Please note: sweet pea seeds are not suitable for eating.
Meaning
In the Victorian language of flowers, the sweet pea stood for farewell and for thanks for happy hours. The Biedermeier era, to which the variety name alludes, cherished domestic life, the garden by the door and the colourful bouquet.
A thought for giving
The sweet pea holds on with fine tendrils to anything that offers support, and so climbs towards the light. A thought for people who support one another.
