Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A yellow cutting sunflower of 80 to 100 cm that flowers from August to October – equally at home in the bed and the vase.
The story
Origins & history
For the indigenous peoples of North America, the sunflower was far more than a food plant. From its flowers and seeds they made dyes for textiles and baskets, and the oil from the seeds was used to care for skin and hair.
Uses
As a cut flower it brings late summer indoors. Cut in the morning, just as the flowers are opening, and put them straight into fresh water. In the bed it welcomes Balcony & Flowering Plant Compost for a good start and Sunflower Fertiliser during the growing season.
Meaning
Greek legend tells of the nymph Clytie, who gazed after the sun god Helios out of love until she became a flower that follows the sun. Later art often linked her with the sunflower – even though the plant was still unknown to the ancient Greeks.
A thought for giving
Waooh takes its time and only flowers from August, when summer is already waning. Some things simply take longer to shine – and then shine all the brighter.
