Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A handy sunflower of 40 to 50 cm whose name promises shades of lemon – in flower from July to October.
The story
Origins & history
Wild sunflowers still grow today on the prairies of North America, along roadsides and on open land. The sunflower belongs to the daisy family, which also includes the common daisy, cornflower and pot marigold. This family is one of the richest in species in the whole plant kingdom.
Uses
Thanks to its handy height it fits wherever large sunflowers would be too imposing. Balcony & Flowering Plant Compost and Sunflower Fertiliser during the growing season give it strength for a long flowering period until October. Children can watch it grow, as it stays at eye level with them.
Meaning
The US state of Kansas is nicknamed the “Sunflower State” and has made the sunflower its state flower. In the Victorian language of flowers, the dwarf sunflower stood for adoration.
A thought for giving
As they germinate, young sunflowers often still wear the empty seed husk like a little hat on their first leaves, until they cast it off. Everything new begins with the courage to shed the old.
