Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A compact, fragrant nasturtium 20 to 30 cm tall – multicoloured and in flower from July to October, made for tubs and pots.
The story
Origins & history
Tropaeolum minus, the dwarf nasturtium, is native to South America and was the first of its genus to reach Europe. Its larger sister, Tropaeolum majus, only followed later. With its low growth, the small species is popular today wherever space is tight.
Uses
Like all nasturtiums, it has edible flowers and leaves with a delicate bite – pretty on salads and open sandwiches. In a pot it stays low at 20 to 30 cm and suits even small balconies. Balcony & Flowering Plant Compost and a sparing dose of Window Box Fertiliser are all it needs.
Meaning
Linnaeus’s daughter Elisabeth Christina described how nasturtium flowers seem to flash at dusk; the phenomenon still bears her name. A lovely thought for a variety called Night & Day.
A thought for giving
Raindrops roll off its leaves without leaving a trace. A wish to give: that whatever would only weigh you down rolls off you just as easily.
