Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Five seed discs with kitchen herbs for the pot: lay them down, cover, keep moist – and harvest fresh greens from May to November.
The story
Origins & history
Kitchen herbs have accompanied people since the very first gardens. Many of our familiar herbs come from the Mediterranean and crossed the Alps with the Romans and later with monks. In medieval monastery gardens they grew in neat beds right next to the kitchen.
Uses
A pot of herbs on the windowsill or balcony turns simple dishes into something special: a few fresh leaves over salad, soup, quark or potatoes. The mix contains both annual and perennial herbs – so the pot stays in use for a long time.
Meaning
On the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance, the monk Walahfrid Strabo described his monastery garden in a poem, the “Hortulus”, in the 9th century. It is regarded as one of the oldest garden books in Europe – a tribute to what grows in small beds.
A thought for giving
On a seed disc, many seeds lie close together and grow into a pot full of herbs. What germinates together grows rich together.
