Check the pot and anchoring
Prepare the pot, drainage mesh and any anchoring wires. Release old wires before lifting; never pull the trunk against a fixed anchor.

Keep drainage holes open
Remove blockages. Mesh can retain compost without sealing the drainage holes. Empty any decorative outer pot after watering.

Treat roots according to species
Gently loosen compost with a blunt stick. Root pruning and retention of old compost depend on species and vigour. Complete root washing or heavy pruning is not a universal rule.
