Repotting Alocasia with care
Root ball, rhizome and planting depth: three close-ups and eight illustrated steps guide the pot change.

Preserve the root ball
The ball and fine roots form one unit. Support it from below and remove only loose old compost.

Fine roots and rhizome
Fine roots absorb water and nutrients. The rhizome stores reserves; handle both gently when repotting.

Position the crown correctly
Keep the leaf-stalk base at its original level. Do not heap extra compost over the crown and rhizome.

A closer look at the compost
Dark peat and coconut fibres with bark pieces form the organic base. Visible pale particles add texture; the mix also contains raw clay, perlite, lava and sand.
Practical guide
Planting and repotting in eight steps
Preserve healthy roots, retain the original crown level and provide free drainage.
- 1
Check the need and prepare
Repot when roots fill the pot or the growing medium needs replacing. For healthy Alocasia, active spring growth is usually a suitable time.
Prepare fresh compost, a clean draining pot and water. Wear gloves when handling the plant, as its sap may irritate.
- 2
Choose a pot to fit the root ball
If more root space is needed, choose a stable pot only slightly larger than the old one. Allow room for fresh compost around the ball without oversizing the container.
Keep drainage holes clear. A closed outer pot is only a cover; water must be able to drain from the inner plant pot.
- 3
Prepare the compost and planting level
Gently loosen the ready-to-use mix. Add enough to the base so the root ball will sit at its original planting level.
The compost already contains nutrients. Do not add starter fertiliser during repotting, and leave space below the rim for watering.
- 4
Release the root ball gently
Ease the ball out of the old pot and support it from below. Do not pull on leaf stalks or the crown.
Preserve healthy fine roots and the rhizome. Remove only loose old compost; routine washing or division is not needed for a pot change.
- 5
Keep the crown at its original level
Centre the ball on the prepared base. Use the old root-ball surface as the guide to the correct level.
Do not bury the rhizome or crown more deeply. Position the Alocasia without bending leaf stalks or pinching roots.
- 6
Fill gently around the sides
Add fresh compost in small amounts between the ball and pot wall. Firm gently until the plant is stable without heavily compressing the mix.
Match the new surface to the old one. Leave watering space and keep extra compost away from the crown.
- 7
Water in and allow drainage
Water slowly and evenly so the new compost settles against the root ball. Allow surplus water to drain completely.
Empty the saucer or outer pot. Check moisture before watering again and avoid keeping the compost constantly wet.
- 8
Support establishment and aftercare
Keep the Alocasia warm and bright without strong direct midday sun. Gently fill any settled gaps without burying the crown.
According to the label, start feeding after 4 to 6 weeks. Adjust dose and frequency to growth and the fertiliser label; reduce watering when growth slows.

Can I pot my Alocasia directly into this mix?
Yes, the compost is ready for potting and planting Alocasia. It contains bark, perlite, lava and coconut fibre among other ingredients, and is pre-fertilised.
How deeply should the rhizome sit when repotting?
Use the previous root-ball surface as your guide. Do not bury the rhizome or crown under extra compost; match the new surface to the old one.
Do I need to divide my Alocasia when changing pots?
No. An ordinary pot change requires neither division nor washing the roots. Gently remove loose old compost while preserving healthy fine roots and rhizomes.
Can I plant directly into a closed decorative pot?
Use an inner plant pot with clear drainage holes. A closed decorative pot serves as a cover; remove water that collects in it after watering.
Should I put a freshly repotted Alocasia directly in the sun?
Choose a warm, bright position without strong direct midday sun. Check moisture before watering again and avoid keeping the compost constantly wet.
When should I start feeding after repotting?
The product label specifies starting further feeding after four to six weeks. Then adjust the amount and frequency to growth and the instructions of the fertiliser you use.
