Plant protection: identify the problem, then act

Build a useful picture of the problem

Record the plant, its position and when the change began. Photograph the whole plant, affected areas and leaf undersides. Are older or younger leaves affected? Is the problem confined to one side? These details are more useful than an isolated close-up. Check neighbouring plants too, without assuming immediately that they share the same cause.

Distinguish growing conditions from infestation

Check root-ball moisture, drainage, root condition and recent changes of position. Drought, waterlogging, cold or unusually strong sunshine can produce symptoms resembling disease or nutrient problems. Then look more closely for insects, webbing, coatings or feeding marks. A yellow leaf on its own does not justify either fertiliser or a plant-protection product.

Choose action that addresses the cause

Correct relevant care problems and remove badly damaged material where appropriate. If an infestation is likely to spread, movable plants can be kept apart temporarily. Mechanical protection has specific roles: a tree guard may protect against animal browsing, but it does not treat leaf disease. Check protective materials regularly for fit and possible constriction.

A product needs an appropriate use

If a plant-protection product is being considered, the plant, target organism, place of use and current instructions must match. Follow the specified application conditions and protective measures. Products offered alongside one another are not automatically suitable for mixing. Homemade sprays are not automatically a compatible solution for an unidentified problem either.

Judge progress, not just old damage

Keep a record of what you changed and when. Watch new growth and whether the problem is spreading; damaged leaves will not always become unmarked again. Avoid changing several measures every day. If the cause remains unclear or the plant declines quickly, seek expert advice with the photographs and observations you have collected.
