Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A mix whose name says who it blooms for: beneficial insects. 10 to 50 cm tall, multicoloured and in flower from June to October.
The story
Origins & history
Gardeners have long known that ladybirds devour aphids. Today, encouraging beneficial insects is at the heart of wildlife-friendly gardening: rather than fighting pests, you invite their natural enemies. This mix brings that idea to the balcony.
Uses
Many beneficial insects, such as hoverflies and lacewings, seek nectar and pollen as adults, while their larvae feed on aphids. A flowering balcony becomes a resting place for them in the middle of town. Balcony & Flowering Plant Compost and Window Box Fertiliser support the mix through its flowering season from June to October.
Meaning
The ladybird, best known of all beneficial insects, carries the Virgin Mary in its name – “Our Lady’s bird” – and is still regarded as a bringer of luck.
A thought for giving
This mix takes up to four weeks to germinate. Whoever waits becomes host to small guests nobody invited, yet who are always welcome.
