Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A narrow-leaved zinnia, only about 40 cm tall, with multicoloured flowers like the pattern of a rug – for tubs, pots and the vase.
The story
Origins & history
Zinnia angustifolia comes from Mexico and belongs to the same genus as the large garden zinnias. Its epithet ‘angustifolia’ means narrow-leaved. Like all zinnias it is a child of warmth and only germinates once it is truly mild.
Uses
Its compact height makes it a good fit for tubs and pots on sunny balconies and patios. It flowers from July into October and can be cut for small posies. Blumenerde Balkon & Blühpflanzen (balcony and flowering plant compost) and Balkonkasten-Dünger (window box fertiliser) provide the right foundation.
Meaning
The variety name alludes to Persian rugs, whose patterns of many colours form a single whole. They have been knotted by hand for centuries, knot by knot – a lovely image for a bed made of many small flowers.
A thought for giving
A rug is made of many small knots, a carpet of flowers of many small plants. Beauty often grows not from grand gestures but from patience with small things.
