Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Light, bowl-shaped flowers in many colours above finely feathered foliage: cosmos grows 60 to 80 cm tall and flowers from July to October.
The story
Origins & history
Cosmos comes from Mexico. At the end of the 18th century it reached Europe by way of Spain. Its name goes back to the Greek ‘kosmos’ – order and adornment – while the epithet ‘bipinnatus’ describes its twice-feathered leaves.
Uses
In the border it forms airy, colourful islands; in a container it brings summer lightness to patio and balcony, well supplied with Blumenerde Balkon & Blühpflanzen (balcony and flowering plant compost) and Balkonkasten-Dünger (window box fertiliser). As a cut flower it gives every bouquet a sense of movement. It thrives in sun or partial shade.
Meaning
The name links the flower to the Greek word for the ordered world, from which ‘cosmos’ and ‘cosmetics’ also derive. Its evenly arranged petals seem like a small emblem of harmony.
A thought for giving
Cosmos takes two to three weeks to germinate and then looks so light, as if it had cost no effort at all. Behind every lightness lies a patient beginning.
