Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A low-growing child of the sun, up to 15 cm, for tubs and pots: multicoloured flowers from June to September, and one portion is enough for around 100 plants.
The story
Origins & history
Portulaca grandiflora comes from South America, where it grows on dry, sunny ground. Its fleshy, narrow leaves store water, helping it cope with heat that troubles other flowers. It is a relative of common purslane, long known as a salad plant.
Uses
It is made for hot balconies, roof terraces and bowls, as it forgives dry days. Its flowers open in sunlight and close in dull weather and in the evening. In Balcony & Flowering Plant Compost with moderate feeds of Window Box Fertiliser it forms dense, flowering cushions.
Meaning
Its German name, Portulakröschen – “little purslane rose” – comes from its flowers, which resemble small roses; in English it is called moss rose because its fine foliage recalls moss. The epithet “grandiflora” means large-flowered.
A thought for giving
Moss roses only open their flowers when the sun shines. A reminder not to miss the bright hours.
