Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A petunia mix whose name promises great things: “Superbissima” means roughly “the most splendid”. It flowers from June to October.
The story
Origins & history
Petunias come from South America, from parts of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The garden petunia arose in 19th-century Europe from a cross between two wild species, one white-flowered and one violet-flowered. Since then, hardly any balcony flower has been bred so intensively.
Uses
Petunias are among the most popular balcony flowers and fill window boxes and tubs with colour all summer. They like plenty of light and regular feeding: Balcony & Flowering Plant Compost and Window Box Fertiliser are a good foundation. Deadheading keeps the plants looking their best.
Meaning
Its name goes back to “petun”, a word used by South American peoples for tobacco, which reached us via French. The petunia is indeed related to tobacco – both belong to the nightshade family.
A thought for giving
Whoever sows petunias in January brings summer to the windowsill while winter still reigns outside. Anticipation is the loveliest form of patience.
