Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
The blue passion flower climbs up to 200 cm in a tub and opens its multicoloured, intricately built flowers from May to October.
The story
Origins & history
Passiflora caerulea comes from southern South America, for example Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Spanish missionaries encountered passion flowers in the 16th and 17th centuries and saw a sign in them. The blue passion flower has long been one of the most popular species in European gardens and conservatories.
Uses
With its tendrils it climbs trellis, mesh or obelisk and clothes a sunny spot on patio or balcony in summer. It spends the winter bright and frost-free. Its orange fruits are ornamental but not for eating.
Meaning
The missionaries read the flower as an image of Christ’s Passion: the corona as the crown of thorns, the three stigmas as the nails, the five anthers as the wounds and the ten petals and sepals as the apostles. That is how it got its name.
A thought for giving
Each single flower of the passion flower lasts only about a day – yet the plant blooms from May to October, because a new one always follows. Beauty that lives in the moment and renews itself every day.
