Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A fragrant, hardy horned violet up to 15 cm that flowers twice a year: from March to May and again from September to November.
The story
Origins & history
Viola cornuta is at home in the mountains of the Pyrenees and northern Spain. Its epithet “cornuta”, horned, describes the long spur behind the flower, which also gives it the name horned violet. In gardens it has been crossed with other violas, and many small-flowered bedding violas descend from it.
Uses
As a biennial it fills the gaps when summer flowers are missing: in autumn after the summer display and in spring before the season really begins. In tubs and pots with Balcony & Flowering Plant Compost and a little Window Box Fertiliser while in flower, it brings colour and scent to door and window.
Meaning
The violet has long been a symbol of modesty; Goethe dedicated the poem “Das Veilchen” to it, which Mozart set to music. Johnny Jump Up is a folk name in English for small violas that seem to pop up everywhere of their own accord.
A thought for giving
Sown in high summer, it lasts through the winter and is among the first to flower in March. A gift for people who know that every cold spell is followed by spring.
