Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A red-flowering F1 geranium of 30 cm that blooms from May to October – grown from seed, a lovely project for the winter months.
The story
Origins & history
Pelargoniums come from southern Africa, above all from the Cape region. In the 17th century seafarers brought the first plants to Europe, where they soon conquered glasshouses and windowsills. The name Pelargonium comes from the Greek “pelargos”, stork – the seed heads resemble a stork’s bill.
Uses
The classic balcony flower, flowering freely for many months. In Balcony & Flowering Plant Compost with regular feeds of Geranium Fertiliser it stays in shape well into autumn. Pelargoniums are perennial and can be overwintered in a bright, frost-free place.
Meaning
Botanically the geranium is a pelargonium, yet the popular name has stuck. The epithet “zonale” describes the dark zone that many of these plants carry on their leaves. In the Alpine countries, bright red geraniums on wooden balconies are part of the village scene.
A thought for giving
A geranium can move indoors every autumn and back out again in spring. A sign of loyalty that lasts beyond a single summer.
