Garlic chives Knolau: perennial, for pots, containers and raised beds, in sun or partial shade – harvest from June to October.
The story
Origins & history
Garlic chives come from East Asia and have been grown in China as a vegetable and seasoning for a very long time. Along with Asian cooking, they have also arrived in European gardens. They are related to chives and garlic and combine something of both.
Uses
The flat leaves bring a mild garlic aroma to the kitchen without a single clove to peel: on bread, in quark, scrambled eggs, salad and wok dishes. In China they are a traditional filling for dumplings.
Meaning
In Chinese, its name sounds similar to the word for “long-lasting” – so it is also a symbol of endurance. The variety name Knolau joins the German words for garlic and leek into one.
A thought for giving
Garlic chives sprout anew after every cut. Here a cut is not an end but the beginning of the next harvest.
