Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Peppermint from seed: perennial, for pots, containers and raised beds, harvested from July to October – one portion is enough for about 50 plants.
The story
Origins & history
Peppermint is a cross between water mint and spearmint and was described in England at the end of the 17th century. Mints themselves were already valued in antiquity. From England, peppermint found its way into the gardens and teacups of all Europe.
Uses
Fresh mint leaves are lovely in tea, lemonade, fruit salad and desserts, and with lamb or peas. In a pot or container the plant stays neatly together – in a bed it likes to spread by runners.
Meaning
The name mint goes back to the Greek myth of the nymph Minthe, who was turned into a plant by the goddess Persephone. Ever since, so the story goes, she releases her scent whenever she is touched.
A thought for giving
Mint spreads beneath the soil, quite silently, and is suddenly everywhere. Good things often find their way quietly.
