Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A tomato that lives up to its name: red fruits striped yellow-orange like a tiger’s coat, 50–100 g each, on plants up to 200 cm – with seed for around 35 plants.
The story
Origins & history
When the tomato reached Europe in the 16th century, people did not quite trust it: it is related to nightshades such as deadly nightshade. For a long time it was therefore grown mainly as an ornamental and a curiosity. Its names from that era sound all the more enchanted.
Uses
With medium-sized fruits, Tigerella is versatile: for salads, on bread or for preserving. It needs a sunny spot and a cane. The leaves are not for eating.
Meaning
In French it was called “pomme d’amour”, in German “Liebesapfel” – love apple – and in Austria it is still called “Paradeiser”, after the apple of paradise. A fruit that was feared, yet named after love and paradise.
A thought for giving
Tomato flowers pollinate themselves – often a light breeze or a gentle tap on the stem is enough for fruit to set. Sometimes all it takes is a little nudge.
