Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Black Cherry is the name of this cherry tomato with fruits of 10–20 g on plants up to 200 cm – for raised beds and tubs in full sun.
The story
Origins & history
Botanists once gave the tomato the name “Lycopersicum”, wolf peach – a sign of how warily people regarded the foreign fruit. Strictly speaking, the tomato is a berry. In Germany it only became an everyday vegetable in the 20th century.
Uses
Cherry tomatoes like Black Cherry are ideal for snacking straight from the plant, for salads and small skewers. In a tub on the patio or balcony they do well with plenty of sun and a cane. Only the fruits are eaten, not the leaves and stems.
Meaning
The journey from “wolf peach” to the favourite fruit of summer shows how much a point of view can change: today the tomato is one of the most popular vegetables in German gardens.
A thought for giving
Whatever still hangs green on the plant in October often ripens on a warm windowsill. Some things only need the right place to come into their own.
