Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Sungold bears yellow cherry tomatoes of 10–20 g on plants up to 200 cm tall – a bright splash of colour for raised beds and large tubs.
The story
Origins & history
Italy described the tomato early on: in the mid-16th century the physician and botanist Pietro Andrea Mattioli called the new fruits from America “pomi d’oro”, golden apples. This became the Italian word “pomodoro”. The first tomatoes known there were probably yellow.
Uses
The yellow fruits bring colour to salads, antipasti and any snacking bowl. The tall plants need a cane or string to climb. Only the ripe fruits are eaten, not the foliage.
Meaning
It took time for Italy to welcome the tomato into its kitchens – today Italian cooking is hard to imagine without it. A yellow variety like Sungold recalls the name where it all began: golden apples.
A thought for giving
Tomatoes that want to climb two metres high need a cane to hold on to. A gift for people who give others something to lean on.
