Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A compact cherry tomato only 40–50 cm tall for hanging baskets, tubs and raised beds – red fruits of 10–20 g, harvested from July to October.
The story
Origins & history
The wild ancestors of the tomato grow on the western slopes of the Andes in Peru and Ecuador. It was first cultivated further north, however, in Mexico; the Aztecs called the fruit “tomatl”, and from that word came our tomato. Spanish conquerors brought it to Europe in the 16th century.
Uses
Thanks to its low habit, Lizzano fits where tall cordon tomatoes have no room: in a hanging basket, a tub on the balcony or along the edge of a raised bed. The small fruits are picked straight from the plant or tossed into salads. Leaves and stems are not for eating.
Meaning
For the Aztecs the tomato was an everyday fruit, cooked with chilli into sauces – a pairing that lives on in Mexican cooking to this day.
A thought for giving
A tomato barely half a metre tall that bears from July to October: abundance does not need a large garden, only a good place in the sun.
