Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Orange pumpkins even without a large bed: Baby Bear grows in containers and raised beds and brings an autumn mood from August to October.
The story
Origins & history
Pumpkins were among the plants that found their way to Europe after the discovery of the Americas. In the 16th century they quickly became at home here and already appear in early herbals. Baby Bear belongs to the species Cucurbita pepo, native to Mexico and Central America.
Uses
Baby Bear suits raised beds and containers and needs a sunny spot; one packet is enough for about 8 plants. The orange fruits decorate table, steps and windowsill before they make their way into the kitchen.
Meaning
We owe glowing Halloween pumpkins to Irish emigrants: at home they carved lanterns from turnips, and in North America they found the pumpkin a larger, more rewarding material.
A thought for giving
This pumpkin needs no large field – a container and a sunny spot are enough. Abundance has less to do with space than with care.
