Miniature gardens: small landscapes with well-matched plants

Give the little landscape a clear theme

Would you like a humid green woodland in glass or a sunny dish of drought-tolerant plants? Choose the position first. A bright window, a table further into the room and a balcony provide very different conditions. Select a few plants with compatible needs and consider their eventual size, rather than judging them only in their small nursery pots.

Open and enclosed are different approaches

An enclosed glass container retains more moisture and can suit small plants that prefer humid conditions. Cacti and other drought-loving succulents do not belong in a constantly humid, closed planting. A container with drainage is helpful for a dry dish garden. A gravel layer alone cannot remove excess water from a container with a sealed base.

Arrange the plants before planting

Try out the arrangement of plants and decorative stones before planting. Leave room between shoots and make sure you can reach the plants for maintenance. Choose a growing medium suited to the group. Plant gently and add water carefully. Decorative elements should not obstruct the plant bases, drainage holes or air movement around the planting.

Watch the first few weeks closely

Check the growing medium, foliage and condensation. Standing water or persistently heavy misting on the glass is a reason to review conditions. An enclosed container can overheat in direct sun. Make one deliberate adjustment and watch the response instead of adding more water, fertiliser and sunlight at the same time.

Let the landscape develop

Remove dead leaves and trim suitable species before they crowd their neighbours. Some plants will eventually need dividing or moving elsewhere. A miniature garden does not stop its plants from growing. Feed according to their needs and the growing medium; vigorous new growth is not always the most useful result in a confined container.
