Watering cyclamen: keep the crown dry

Florist’s cyclamen add colour indoors just as the days become shorter. With Cyclamen persicum, a fixed watering day matters less than a quick look at the compost, the position and the centre of the plant.

The most important rule is simple: keep the compost moderately moist, but keep the crown and centre of the tuber dry. This avoids leaving water where the closely packed leaf and flower stalks emerge.

Water in three simple steps

1. Check the surface first

   If the top layer of compost still feels distinctly moist, wait. Water when the surface has begun to dry. A calendar cannot replace this check: temperature, pot size and position all change how quickly the plant uses water.

2. Water at the pot edge or from below

   Water carefully at the inner edge of the pot, or stand the inner pot in a shallow dish of water for about 10 to 15 minutes. This lets the compost take up moisture without pouring directly into the crown. The centre of the tuber should remain dry even when you use diluted fertiliser.

3. Let all excess water drain

   Remove the pot from the water afterwards and empty the saucer. Soggy compost and standing water do not provide a useful reserve; they put the roots under stress.

Bright and cool beats hot, dry air

Choose a bright position with filtered light and no harsh midday sun. Cyclamen prefer cooler conditions while they are growing and flowering. Blooms and foliage fade more quickly directly above a radiator or in hot, dry air; strong draughts are not a good alternative either.

“Cool” does not mean frost hardy. The Cyclamen persicum discussed here is an indoor or glasshouse plant and should not be treated like a hardy garden cyclamen.

Active growth or dormancy?

Fresh leaves, buds and flowers show that the plant is actively growing. It then needs a steady but moderate water supply. Feed only during this phase and follow the appropriate product label.

When leaves yellow naturally after flowering and the plant begins to die back, reduce watering gradually and stop feeding. More fertiliser will not correct a natural dormant phase or a position that is too warm or too wet.

Your 30-second check before watering

• Is the surface still moist? Do not water today.
• Is the plant active and the surface dry? Water from below, then let it drain.
• Has water remained in the crown or saucer? Remove the excess and keep the centre dry.
• Are the leaves yellowing? Check for excess water, heat and possible dormancy before adding fertiliser.

This turns a tricky care question into a small routine: feel the compost, water from below and let the pot drain. Your cyclamen receives water and nutrients when it needs them during active growth, while its sensitive crown stays dry.
