Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
An annual flower mix for partly shaded to shady spots, 60 to 100 cm tall, with blooms for insects and the vase – 90 g for about 30 m².
The story
Origins & history
The name reveals the idea: an island in the garden that offers birds something beyond the summer. Where flowers grow, birds find insects for their young, and seed heads left standing can provide food in autumn. The goldfinch earned its old German name ‘Distelfink’, thistle finch, by picking seeds straight from the flower heads.
Uses
The mix is intended as a food source for bees and other beneficial insects and is put together for partial shade and shade. Now and then you can cut a bouquet for the vase. Leaving the faded stems standing in autumn follows the idea of the bird island.
Meaning
The goldfinch appears in many Renaissance paintings, often in the hand of the Christ Child – as a symbol of the soul and of hope.
A thought for giving
Leaving faded stems standing sets a table for others in autumn. Not everything has to be tidied away to do good.
