Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Fragrant thyme with white flowers: perennial, for sunny spots in pots, containers and raised beds, harvested from July to October.
The story
Origins & history
Thyme is at home on the warm, stony slopes of the Mediterranean, where it releases its scent in the sun. The Greeks and Romans already used it in cooking and custom. Through monastery gardens it found its way to Central Europe.
Uses
Thyme seasons stews, potatoes, roasted vegetables, tomato sauces and meat; it tolerates long cooking and can go in early. In a pot on the balcony or in a raised bed, it releases its scent as soon as you brush past.
Meaning
The name is traced back to the Greek “thymos”, which stands for courage and vitality, among other things. In the Middle Ages, a sprig of thyme was regarded as a sign of bravery given to knights on their way.
A thought for giving
Thyme stays small and low, yet fills a whole garden with fragrance. Impact does not depend on size.
