Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Rosemary Meertau is fragrant, perennial and partially hardy – a herb for sunny spots in pots, containers and raised beds that asks for patience during germination.
The story
Origins & history
Rosemary grows wild on the coasts of the Mediterranean, often so close to the water that the sea spray reaches it. This is the origin of its Latin name “ros marinus”, dew of the sea – and of the German variety name Meertau. It came to Central Europe with the Romans and monks; today it is classified botanically among the sages.
Uses
Rosemary gives roast potatoes, lamb, poultry, bread and roasted vegetables a strong, resinous aroma and can cook for a long time. In a container it can stand outside in summer; where winters are harsh, a sheltered spot suits it well.
Meaning
Rosemary has stood for remembrance and fidelity since ancient times. In Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, Ophelia offers rosemary “for remembrance”, and for a long time it was part of the bridal wreath in Germany.
A thought for giving
Rosemary takes 30 to 60 days to germinate – and then stays for many years. What begins slowly often lasts the longest.
