Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Oregano Kleiner Italiener is hardy and perennial, germinates in just 7–14 days and loves the sun – for pots, containers and raised beds.
The story
Origins & history
Oregano grows wild on the sunny mountain slopes of the Mediterranean. Its name is traced back to Greek and can be translated as “ornament” or “joy of the mountains”. In Britain the wild form is also known as wild marjoram and grows on dry verges.
Uses
Oregano belongs on pizza, in tomato sauces, with grilled vegetables, feta and lamb. Dried, it keeps its aroma particularly well – ideal for keeping summer for the winter.
Meaning
In ancient Greece, so tradition has it, bridal couples were crowned with oregano as a sign of joy. It became known worldwide in the 20th century with Italian pizza.
A thought for giving
Oregano still releases its aroma even when dried. What has ripened in the sun carries its warmth for a long time.
