True lavender with lilac flowers in July and August: fragrant, hardy and perennial, 40–50 cm tall – for sunny beds and edgings.
The story
Origins & history
True lavender is at home in the dry, sunny mountain regions of the western Mediterranean. Its name is usually traced back to the Latin “lavare”, to wash, because it was added to washing and bath water early on. Through monastery gardens it spread northwards.
Uses
Lavender is a classic bedding and edging plant for sunny gardens. Dried flower spikes stay fragrant for a long time in bouquets and in sachets in the linen cupboard. A light trim after flowering keeps the plants compact.
Meaning
The flowering lavender fields of Provence have become a symbol of the southern French summer. In the language of flowers, lavender stands for devotion and quiet attentiveness.
A thought for giving
Lavender is hardy: it survives the cold season and flowers again the following summer. A wish for anyone who is going through a winter right now.
