Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Colourful radishes on 5 metres of seed tape: simply lay it out and within a few days the first green appears – again and again from March to September.
The story
Origins & history
Radishes are small forms of the radish plant, one of the oldest vegetables of all. The Greek historian Herodotus reports that the workers on the Egyptian pyramids were given radishes, onions and garlic. The German name Radieschen goes back to the Latin ‘radix’, root.
Uses
Radishes are a rewarding first vegetable: they grow in sun or partial shade and fit into any gap in the bed. The seed tape holds the seeds at the right spacing, so no thinning is needed. Lay a new length every few weeks and you will be harvesting into autumn.
Meaning
In Oaxaca, Mexico, the ‘Noche de los Rábanos’, the Night of the Radishes, is celebrated every year on 23 December: large radishes are carved into elaborate figures and entire scenes.
A thought for giving
Radishes often germinate within five days – hardly any seed answers so quickly. A gift for the impatient and for everyone who likes to see something grow soon.
