Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
Organic seed for red block peppers to eat fresh: sturdy plants of 60–100 cm for raised beds and tubs, harvested from August to October.
The story
Origins & history
Peppers come from Central and South America; in Mexico they were grown thousands of years ago. Columbus brought the pods to Spain in 1493. By way of the Balkans the plant reached Hungary, still regarded as the land of paprika – the word “paprika” itself reached us by way of Hungarian.
Uses
Red block peppers are delicious fresh in salads, as crudités or stuffed and baked. In a tub on a sunny balcony the plant with its fruits is ornamental too. It likes a warm, sheltered spot best.
Meaning
In Hungary paprika is a matter of national pride. It was there, in the 1930s, that Albert Szent-Györgyi extracted vitamin C in large quantities from peppers, and in 1937 he received the Nobel Prize.
A thought for giving
A pepper starts out green and only turns bright red with time. Each fruit travels through its colours until it has fully become itself.
