Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
The classic among red chillies: De Cayenne ripens from July to October in raised beds and tubs – and one packet is enough for around 50 plants.
The story
Origins & history
After the chilli reached Europe with Columbus, Portuguese seafarers spread it rapidly in the 16th century across Africa to India and South-East Asia. Within a few decades the American plant had made itself at home there – today many Asian cuisines are hard to imagine without chilli.
Uses
Cayenne chillies can be used fresh, but above all they dry and grind well. The result is a spice that brings warmth to soups, stews and sauces. With seed for so many plants, there is plenty to share.
Meaning
Its name is associated with the town of Cayenne in French Guiana. As “cayenne pepper”, the red powder found its way onto spice racks all over the world.
A thought for giving
Threaded onto strings and dried, chilli pods keep summer alive deep into winter. A gift that stores warmth for later.
