Details, use and guidance
Technical information, use and safety guidance in one place.
A round carrot: Pariser Markt 5 forms globe-shaped orange roots and is made for raised beds and containers.
The story
Origins & history
The cultivated carrot comes from Central Asia, from the region of present-day Afghanistan. The first cultivated carrots were purple or yellow; the orange carrot as we know it today was only bred in the Netherlands in the 17th century.
Uses
Round carrots suit raised beds and containers in sun or partial shade. One packet is enough for 8–10 running metres. Harvest runs from June to September – eaten fresh or cooked whole.
Meaning
The variety name, Paris Market, recalls the market gardens around Paris that once supplied the city’s markets. And the familiar orange colour shows how much breeding lies within a seemingly simple vegetable.
A thought for giving
Carrots take their time: up to three weeks pass before the first delicate green. Those who keep at it and keep the soil moist are rewarded – steadiness is half the harvest.
