An F1 watermelon for containers and raised beds: Mini Love bears green fruits of 1–2 kg – a melon of handy size from your own garden.
The story
Origins & history
The watermelon comes from Africa. In ancient Egypt it was grown more than 4,000 years ago and depicted on tomb walls; its seeds were even found in the tomb of Tutankhamun. From there it spread via the Mediterranean and Asia to the warm regions of the world.
Uses
Mini Love grows in containers and raised beds in a warm, sunny spot; one packet is enough for about 5 plants. Yellow flowers appear in summer, and in August and September the fruits ripen for slicing and sharing.
Meaning
The botanical epithet ‘lanatus’ means woolly – after the finely hairy young shoots. In many countries the watermelon is the very symbol of summer.
A thought for giving
A watermelon is mostly water – and yet it tastes of summer. Sometimes sun and time are all it takes to turn something simple into something special.
