Variety knowledge
Erdbeere Elan F1: origin, uses and meaning
Strawberries from seed that fruit in their first year: Elan F1 flowers white and bears red fruit from June to October – in containers too.
Origins & history
Our garden strawberry is younger than you might think: it arose in 18th-century France as a cross between two American wild species – the scarlet strawberry from North America and the Chilean strawberry, whose plants a French officer had brought back from Chile. The epithet ‘ananassa’ refers to its scent, said to recall pineapple.
Uses
Elan F1 suits containers and raised beds in sun or partial shade. As pelleted seed, the tiny seeds are coated and can be picked up and placed one by one. Fed with strawberry fertiliser (Erdbeer-Dünger), you pick from June to October.
Meaning
In medieval painting the strawberry stands for paradise and purity. Hieronymus Bosch let giant strawberries grow in his ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’.
„A thought for giving
The true fruits of the strawberry are the tiny nutlets on its skin – the red part is only the vessel that carries them. Sometimes what matters most lies where we do not look first.
Manufacturer: SPERLI GmbH. Seeds, not a plant – the image shows the original packet.
Contents: 1 packet – enough for approx. 5 plants. Germination rates vary with conditions; sowing a little extra is normal.
Start indoors or sow directly?
This variety is started indoors (January–March) and planted out once it is warm enough.
When can I harvest?
Harvest: June–October. According to the seed packet; times vary with region, weather and sowing date.
Nothing has come up – what now?
Check temperature and moisture first: germination takes 14–21 days at 15–20 °C. Soil that is too cold or dries out, or seeds sown too deep, are the most common causes. Use fresh seed compost and resow if necessary.
How should I store seeds?
Cool, dry and dark – ideally in the closed packet in a tin or jar at around 5–15 °C. Opened packets keep best when tightly closed. Use by the date printed on the packet.
Do I get seeds or a plant?
Seeds in the original SPERLI seed packet – not a plant. The product image shows the packet.
