Peanuts from your own container: Jimmy’s Pride grows 30–60 cm tall, flowers yellow and lets its cream-coloured fruits ripen underground.
The story
Origins & history
The peanut comes from South America, from the region of present-day Bolivia and northern Argentina, where it was grown thousands of years ago. Portuguese and Spanish seafarers spread it to Africa and Asia in the 16th century. Although called a nut, botanically it is a legume – a relative of beans and peas.
Uses
An exciting project for containers and raised beds in a warm, sunny spot. After flowering, stalks called pegs grow down into the soil, where the pods develop; a loose soil makes their way easy. Harvest is in August and September, and the kernels are usually roasted.
Meaning
The botanical epithet ‘hypogaea’ means ‘below the earth’. In the USA the agricultural scientist George Washington Carver made the peanut an important crop for the exhausted soils of the South in the early 20th century.
A thought for giving
The peanut flowers in the light and then deliberately lowers its fruit into the earth. Those who put down roots can bear rich fruit.
