Choose well, use correctly

Vegetables from your own seeds are fresh, varied and often more flavourful than shop-bought ones. Our vegetable varieties are annuals and range from tomatoes, chillies, peppers and cucumbers through pumpkins, courgettes and melons to quick crops such as radishes, carrots, bush beans and baby-leaf salad – including proven F1 varieties and organic seed.

How to choose the right variety

  • For balconies and containers: cherry tomatoes such as Sungold or Lizzano, snack cucumber, chillies, mini watermelon and the strawberry Elan.
  • For beds and raised beds: carrots, radishes, bush beans, courgettes, pumpkins and salad.
  • For greenhouses and warm spots: peppers, hot peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers.
  • For explorers: Cape gooseberry, peanut, popcorn maize, strawberry spinach and lemon cucumber.

Sowing in brief

Warmth-loving fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes, chillies and peppers are started indoors from February or March in seed compost and planted out after mid-May. Sow radishes, carrots, salad and beans directly in the bed. Propagation systems with a lid keep moisture even during germination.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start tomatoes?

Usually from late February to April at about 20–25 °C; the young plants go outdoors only after the last frosts.

What are seed tape and pelleted seed?

Seed tape holds the seeds at the right spacing, pelleted seed is coated – both make even sowing easier.

When should I feed?

Only once the young plants are well established; the seed compost is enough for germination.
