Cacti in autumn: check their winter position first

Water less, but match care to the species and its surroundings. Check desert cacti this autumn and plan any necessary repotting for spring.

AUTUMN CARE · CACTI

The watering can is ready – but does the cactus on the windowsill actually need a drink? In late October, look at the plant and its surroundings first. Many desert cacti are entering a quieter period. A fixed weekly watering routine rarely suits that change.

1. Which cactus are you caring for?

A spiny globe or column does not automatically belong in the same care group as a Christmas cactus. Schlumbergera has flat, segmented stems and comes from tropical rainforests. Its root ball should not dry out completely, even while it is preparing to form buds. The following steps are for desert cacti; also check the care requirements of your particular species.

2. Consider the winter position and moisture together

Start with a bright position at a temperature suitable for the species. Frost-sensitive plants need protection; there is no single ideal winter temperature for every cactus.

Dormant desert cacti need much less water. Let the growing medium dry between waterings and keep an eye on the plant. A warm living room is no reason to continue a summer watering routine – or to impose months of complete dryness without further checks.

  • Check moisture inside the pot before watering, rather than judging the surface alone.
  • Water only when needed, in keeping with the species.
  • Let excess water drain away completely and empty the saucer.

Severe shrivelling calls for a closer look at the conditions and care. A soft, discoloured plant should not simply be given more water.

3. Make a note for spring

If the roots have filled the pot, note a possible repotting for the start of the next growing season. A drainage hole remains essential. Choosing a growing medium cannot replace a suitable position or watering according to need.

If your species needs a small proportion of humus, you can keep this mix in mind for that job. Follow the instructions on the pack; a stated interval before feeding does not amount to a general recommendation to fertilise in winter.
