Autumn-planting onion sets in a container: an October start

October is the time to plant autumn-planting onion sets in a large, well-drained container. The right variety, a sunny position and careful moisture control give them a sound start before winter.

Autumn-planting onion sets use the cooler months to get an early start. In October, choose only varieties specifically sold for autumn planting and overwintering. A sunny position, a generous container and reliable drainage make it possible to grow them without a vegetable bed.

Five steps for overwintering onion sets in a container

  1. Choose autumn-planting onion sets

Look for varieties specifically sold for autumn planting or overwintering. Ordinary spring-planting sets are not a like-for-like substitute. You are planting small, immature onions – not garlic cloves or ornamental flower bulbs.

  2. Prepare a large, deep container

Choose a frost-resistant pot or planter with unobstructed drainage holes. Fill it with a loose, peat-free potting compost. Persistently wet compost is the main winter risk, as the sets may rot. A typical shallow window box is usually too cramped for full-sized bulb onions.

  3. Leave the tip just visible

Plant the sets about 2 cm deep, leaving only the pointed tip just above the surface. Space them 10 to 15 cm apart, gently firm the compost and water thoroughly once. Wider spacing gives each onion more room to develop.

  4. Give them sun and monitor moisture

Keep the container outdoors in a sunny, preferably sheltered position. After prolonged rain, check that water can drain away freely. Water again only when the compost begins to dry. If birds pull out newly planted sets, protect them with suitable netting or fleece until they root.

  5. Watch the foliage in early summer

Autumn-planted onions are usually ready to harvest in June or July, depending on the variety, position and weather. When the foliage yellows and folds over, lift the bulbs carefully. The exact timing depends on the variety and weather.

Three bulbs, three different methods

Autumn-planting onion sets are small, immature onions sold as planting material for autumn. Garlic is grown from individual cloves. Ornamental alliums and other flower bulbs follow their own, usually much deeper, planting rules. One set of instructions cannot be applied to all three groups.
