In southern Europe, a pot of basil on the windowsill or balcony has long been part of everyday life – close to the kitchen, close to the sun.

Uses

On the balcony, basil is always within reach: a few leaves for tomatoes, pasta, salad or a summer drink. Harvesting the shoot tips regularly keeps the plant dense and compact.

Meaning

In Greece basil is closely linked with the Church: at the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross in September, sprigs of basil are blessed and taken home. According to legend, it grew where the Cross of Christ was found.

A thought for giving

One pot on the balcony is enough to smell the south for a whole summer.
